What role does science play in natural skincare products?

We are one of the very few natural beauty brands globally who undertake in-vitro testing of our end formulations. Working alongside scientific experts is traditionally the domain of prestige or large corporations, but we have achieved this – working with New Zealand’s best scientific minds to help elevate product textures, enhance hydration levels, and deliver healthy-looking skin.

What role does science play in natural skincare products?

In-vitro investigations: our unique difference

Our focus on in-vitro scientific investigations sets us apart from global brands, and other New Zealand skincare brands. It adds a layer of scientific excellence to our natural skincare products

Working with the scientists at Trinity Bioactives, we look at the effect of human skin cells when exposed to end formulations. With this method, we measure how skin cells stimulate collagen above natural collagen levels.

Our focus on in-vitro scientific investigations sets us apart from global brands, and other New Zealand skincare brands. It adds a layer of scientific excellence to our natural skincare products. We have won numerous government research grants to assist with investment in this space.

Working with the scientists at Trinity Bioactives, we look at the effect of human skin cells when exposed to end formulations. With this method, we can demonstrate two critical anti-ageing markers: how skin cells stimulate collagen above natural collagen levels; and how the chemistry inhibits free radical damage.

Why is in-vitro our preferred testing method?

PRECISE: Investigations measure very specific biological actions of human skin cells.

ACCURATE: Our natural skincare products are subject to robust scientific methodologies in a controlled environment.

OBJECTIVE: Trials are conducted by an independent laboratory. Product names are not used for the study, so it is completely blind; and there are no human variables to influence results.

“As consumers know, the market for natural skincare products is a crowded one and identifying authentic brands can be difficult. I believe consumers deserve results-driven products and a scientific level of proof that formulations have been tested and validated, including the all-important testing on human fibroblast cells in-vitro.”

ELIZABETH BARBALICH, ANTIPODES FOUNDER & CEO

Clinical trials

Human clinical trials are key indicators of product performance. Conducted on living, volunteer human subjects, they measure a product’s ability to keep skin hydrated, reduce dryness and wrinkle depth, or protect sensitive skin from irritation.

We test our natural skincare products against a range of criteria in robust clinical settings. Our award-winning Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream has been clinically shown to reduce wrinkle depth by 22% and dryness by 85.7%. When tested by a group of ten women over an eight-week period, Baptise H2O Ultra-Hydrating Water Gel was clinically shown to hydrate skin by up to 52% after 24 hours – showing that it continued to hydrate skin, long after the formulation was applied.

Dermatologically tested for sensitive skin

Selected natural skincare products undergo dermatological testing. This is conducted in an independent clinical setting in New York, on approximately 50 men and women with sensitive skin. Participants measure their skin’s reaction to the product over a period of six weeks.

To achieve a successful result, our dermatologically tested products were shown not to demonstrate a potential for irritation or sensitivity – making them ideal natural skincare products for sensitive skin.
