What is healthy hydrated skin?
Plumped, fresh, and bouncy: that’s hydrated skin. Our skin contains a ready-made barrier, made up of dead skin cells (corneocytes) and fats (lipids), which form a seal to defend against pollutants and keep moisture levels intact. When this barrier dries out, the cells underneath can lose water and gradually shrivel, raisin-like, resulting in the appearance of fine lines and parched skin.
Hydration is essential for the health of every skin type – even oily. If your skin feels itchy, tight, has a dull appearance, and tends to wrinkle when you pinch it, there’s a high chance it’s dehydrated. Contrary to popular opinion, there is little evidence that drinking water can directly hydrate the skin, as the act of drinking water can’t penetrate the skin’s top layer (epidermis).
